
The Philippine National Police (PNP) Forensic Group was time-honored in 2021. It was a watershed moment in the history of forensic science in the Philippines, a momentous event in the 21st century, earning to carry the name, PNP Forensic Group. The group was formed with the prime objective of enhancing the investigative competencies of the police force through the application of scientific methods and techniques. Since its inception, the group devoted itself to building a solid foundation for forensic science in the country. The Philippine National Police (PNP) Forensic Group has been at the vanguard of forensic investigation, providing crucial support to law enforcement agencies in solving crimes and delivering justice. It has played a pivotal role in advancing the field of forensic science in the Philippines. Through its resolute commitment and expertise, it has become an indispensable asset in the pursuit of truth and the protection of society.
On May 18, 2023, its 78th anniversary was commemorated, bannering the theme “PNP FG, Soaring High with 78 Years of Forensic Expert Services for the Filipino,” with distinguished guest of honor and speaker, PNP Chief Police General Benjamin C Acorda Jr., at the Multi-Purpose Center, Camp Crame, Quezon City.
“Throughout its remarkable history, PNP FG has consistently provided exceptional forensic services to the Filipino people. With unwavering commitment and expertise, the organization has played a pivotal role in the pursuit of justice, and the maintenance of peace and order in the country.” PGen Acorda underscored.
This occasion also grants an opportunity to recognize the exemplary achievements of individuals and units within PNP FG. PNP Forensic Group expressed sincere gratitude to all the individuals and organizations for their invaluable contributions, unwavering support, and commitment to promoting excellence in forensic services and enhancing the capabilities of PNP.
Over the years, the PNP Forensic Group has continuously evolved its expertise and capabilities to keep pace with advancements in forensic science. From its creation on May 19, 1945, acknowledged as the Fingerprint Section of G2 (the Division of the Military Police Command in West Pacific of the U.S. Army), this was later upgraded to a Branch and renamed as Crime Laboratory of the Criminal Investigation Service, the investigative arm of the Philippine Constabulary (PC).
Re-organized in 1959 as a separate unit of PC, it took on the name of PC Forensic Laboratory. On December 01, 1960, the unit was called the PC Constabulary Laboratory pursuant to T.O No. 3. On June 28, 1961, this was activated as a separate unit of GHQAFP pursuant to S.O No. 453. Then called the PC Crime Laboratory, construction of its Headquarters began a year before its date of completion. This was under the stint of then Philippine Constabulary Chief Gen. Vicente Raval.
The group has expanded its mantle of specialized knowledge. Its team of highly skilled forensic experts has undergone rigorous training and professional development, ensuring that they are equipped with the latest knowledge and techniques in the field.
The first in PNP to be ISO Certified (in 2006), the PNP Forensic Group celebrates its 78 years of expert service, their legacy of excellence and commitment to justice stand as testaments to their imperative contributions. Through their proficiency, professionalism, and indefatigable dedication, it has helped outline the field of forensic science in the Philippines, and continues to be an indispensable pillar in the criminal justice system, ensuring that evidence speaks the truth bringing closure to countless victims and their families. By continuously embracing advancements in forensic science and maintaining high standards of professionalism, the PNP Forensic Group remains a key asset in the pursuit of truth, justice, and a safer nation.
