Among the 225,000 plus uniformed men and women of the Philippine National Police, there are those whose courage and selflessness are deemed extraordinary, going beyond the call of duty and rising above the rest. One such story was the selfless deed of a police officer who fearlessly fought against the powerful water currents to rescue two innocent individuals from the grasp of death and made the ultimate sacrifice.
Police Corporal Mark Edhyson L Arinabo, a member of the Philippine National Police (PNP) assigned at PCP 3 of the Makati Police Station, is a native of Capailalian, Pamplona in Cagayan, and currently residing in Barangay 188 in Tala, Caloocan City. He was not just a law enforcer, but also a loving father to two children, and a loving son of Mr. Edward B. Arinabo Sr. and Mrs. Josephine L. Arinabo. Known for his kind-hearted nature and unflinching dedication to his duty, he was a well-respected member of the community. His endearing smile and unwavering commitment to serving and protecting his fellow citizens made him a beloved figure among the residents.
The hot summer setting over Cagayan compelled Police Corporal Arinabo, together with his family, to troop to a nearby river to cool off the scorching rising temperature. As they were enjoying the family’s laughter which echoed through the air, the joyful atmosphere was shattered by piercing panicky screams. Two children, caught in the river’s treacherous flow, were desperately keeping their heads above the waters, the raging currents threatening to carry them far away. Their desperate cries for help piercing the air sent shock waves of panic throughout the river.
PCpl Arinabo’s heart beats went wild, and his instinct as protector went into high gear, priming him into action. A frightening reality hit him, consciously aware that these innocent lives hung on a thread. He was their last hope. Knowing that time was crucial, PCpl Arinabo, with unwavering resolve plunged into the river, oblivious of the danger that lies ahead. Amidst the roaring waters and the river’s wrath, PCpl Arinabo reached the drowning children; and desperate to keep them safe, he battled the torrent, his powerful strokes propelling him forward. The weight of his duty as protector pushed him to his limits, driven by a burning desire to save those innocent lives and reach the shore at all costs.
Gasping for breath, PCpl Arinabo never wavered from his objective – to save both children. He was successfully in doing so, but sometimes fate can deal a cruel hand. In a heart-wrenching twist, the current became his unyielding challenger. Much as he fought valiantly to withstand its merciless grip, PCpl Arinabo heavily paid for his sacrifice, losing his own life. A heartbreaking moment, the river claimed a hero. PCpl Arinabo gave in to the river’s cold embrace.
The whole PNP organization mourned the loss of a brave soul, a selfless servant who had given his all to save others.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the untimely passing of Police Corporal Mark Edhyson L Arinabo, a courageous member of the Philippine National Police (PNP) who lost his life in a tragic drowning incident on May 26, 2023”, PNP Chief, Police General Benjamin C Acorda Jr. announced three days later.
“The loss of Officer Arinabo is a tremendous blow to our community, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and colleagues in this difficult time. PNP will provide all the necessary support and assistance to the bereaved family. We ask the public to join us in honoring PCpl Arinabo’s memory and service to our nation, ” PNP Chief, Police General Benjamin C Acorda Jr., announced.
This incident reminds us that generalizations and sweeping judgments relative to the organization are oftentimes flawed and unfair. It is essential to recognize and appreciate the numerous acts of bravery and self-sacrifice of those who work sincerely and tirelessly to keep our communities safe and secure.
Police Corporal Arinabo will always be remembered as a true hero. His act in saving two drowning children serves as evidence of the most noble quality of humanity. PCpl Arinabo, indeed, may be missed, but his memory will forever be embedded in our hearts, creating a burning flame for generations. The Philippine National Police vowed to keep his legacy alive, never to forget the extraordinary man who had given his life to save others. His selfless act served as a stark reminder of the extraordinary lengths police officers go through to protect and save lives even at the cost of their very own.
