April 9, 2024 is the 82nd anniversary of the fall of Bataan, a day of solemn reflection and remembrance. President Elpidio Quirino officially designated April 9 as Bataan Day through Proclamation No. 381, s. 1953. Subsequently, this significant day was honored and recognized as “Araw ng Kagitingan” by Executive Order No. 203, s. 1987. These official declarations serve as enduring tributes to the courage and sacrifice of those who valiantly defended freedom and democracy during that pivotal moment in history.
Spearheaded by the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office in collaboration with the Police Regional Office 1 led by Police Brigadier General Lou F. Evangelista, Regional Director, and various government agencies, the 82nd Araw ng Kagitingan, with the theme “Pagpaparangal sa Kagitingan ng mga Beterano: Saligan ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino” was commemorated at the USAFIP-NL Military Shrine in Darigayos, Luna, La Union on April 9, 2024.
The ceremony commenced with an Ilocano prayer, followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem and the La Union Hymn. A Wreath-Laying activity was also conducted, symbolizing reverence and tribute for the fallen heroes and their sacrifices which was led by Police Brigadier General Evangelista; Hon. Mario Eduardo Ortega, Vice-Governor of La Union; and other esteemed dignitaries and guests.
Inspiring relevant messages were delivered by the Local Chief Executive (LCE) and the Regional Director, underscoring the valor and selflessness of the men in uniform in the name of public service. The Vice-Governor’s message of support emphasized the community’s commitment to recognizing and honoring the sacrifices made by the soldiers and the peace-makers.
Adding a touch of cultural vibrancy to the event, a spirited performance of a traditional folk dance by the talented members of Dulaang ELYU captivated the attendees. The solemnity of the occasion was punctuated by a 21-gun salute, with a medical-dental mission for the veterans at the Kadiwa ng Pangulo Market capping the day and exemplifying a commitment to caring for those who have served the nation with dedication and valor.
More than 80 years have passed. And those heroes who gave up their youth and innocence so that the youth today could relish theirs have aged. Now veritably called the Philippine Veterans assuming different roles, they deserve to be remembered and honored.
Indeed, the essence of the 82nd Araw ng Kagitingan is a poignant reminder of the gallantry of the nation’s heroes, bringing together the community in remembrance and appreciation for the heroes’ lasting impact on peace and freedom.
