Celebrating the 126th Anniversary of Philippine Independence:A Commemoration of Freedom, History and a Future Bright & Peaceful

The Philippines proudly marks its 126th Independence Day, also known as Araw ng Kalayaan (Day of Freedom) commemorating the historic proclamation of independence from Spanish rule on June 12, 1898. This significant milestone in the nation’s history was honored with a series of events led by His Excellency President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., starting with a Flag Raising and Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Rizal National Monument in Rizal Park, Manila City on June 12, 2024.

Simultaneously, a commemorative program took place at the Philippine National Police (PNP) National Headquarters, Camp BGen Rafael T Crame in Quezon City, and in various Police Regional Offices. The Acting Deputy Chief PNP for Administration, PLtGen Emmanuel B. Peralta, delivered the message of the Chief PNP, Police General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil, who attended the ceremonies at the Rizal Park.

In his address, Police General Marbil emphasized the day’s importance, honoring the heroes’ unwavering spirit and sacrifices that laid the very foundation for the nation’s birth. “Today, we gather to commemorate the 126th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence, a significant milestone in our nation’s history. This day calls for moments of reflection, remembrance, and a renewed dedication to the principles that have guided our journey towards freedom and progress,” PGen Marbil stated.

This year’s theme, “Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan,” encapsulates the essence of our national odyssey, reminding us of the path we have traveled, the future we aspire to have and the rich history that shapes our identity as Filipinos. Each element of this theme holds a profound significance in understanding and appreciating our journey as a nation.

Kalayaan or freedom stands as a testament to the hard-earned liberty that our ancestors fought for with their blood, sweat, and tears. This priceless gift, safeguarded and upheld through generations, serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who came before us. Our freedom is not just a privilege; it is a responsibility that demands our constant vigilance.

Kinabukasan meaning future, underscores our collective commitment to building a brighter and more prosperous future for the coming generations. Our efforts today will lay the strong foundation for a future where every Filipino can thrive with dignity and opportunity.

Kasaysayan or history, is not just a reflection of where we have been but a compass to guide us towards where we aspire to be. It calls upon us to preserve, celebrate, and learn from our rich cultural heritage, ensuring that the stories of our ancestors continue to inspire and shape generations to come. In doing so, we uphold a legacy of resilience, diversity, and unity that defines the essence of being Filipino.

Police General Marbil’s closing message states, “In the words of our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, ‘Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makararating sa paroroonan.’ Let us celebrate this day with pride and gratitude, mindful of the immense privilege and responsibility that come with being heirs to the legacy of Philippine independence. May the spirit of freedom continue to inspire us, guide us, and unite us as we journey towards a brighter tomorrow.”

The Parada ng Kalayaan held at the Quirino Grandstand resonated with deep historical reflection and aspirations. President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., in his address, reminded the nation of the significance of Independence Day, marking 126 years since the Philippine flag was first raised—a symbol of Asia’s first republic and a testament to the sacrifices made by our ancestors.

He emphasized that the commemoration is not just a reflection of history but also a challenge to continue the fight for our freedom. It served as a reminder to the Filipino people, particularly the youth, of the hardships endured by our ancestors and heroes to secure our freedom and peace. Freedom, as underscored, must be nurtured, guarded, and defended vigilantly. Any lapse in vigilance could lead to its loss and seizure once more.

President Marcos, Jr. concluded with a call to action, urging all Filipinos to embody the spirit of the past in every step toward a brighter future. He envisioned a Philippines free from poverty, hunger, injustice, and other obstacles to progress—a nation guided by history towards genuine freedom, hope, enlightenment and prosperity.

The 126th celebration of Philippine Independence Day was not just a festival; it was a reaffirmation of national pride, a call to protect hard-earned freedom, and a promise to forge ahead toward a brighter future. As the nation stood united in remembrance and resolve, the echoes of the past intertwined with the aspirations for tomorrow, promise a journey towards a Bagong Pilipinas!
