Compassion in Action: United Response Saves Life in Lucena City

Depression is a silent struggle that affects many individuals. It often starts with a sense of hopelessness that gradually deepens. For some, the emotional burden becomes so intense that they begin to feel trapped with no escape. Without timely support and intervention, it can lead individuals—especially the youth, to make life-threatening decisions.

On April 24, 2025, a teenage boy, identified by the alias “Gc,” attempted to end his life at the Gulang-Gulang Intersection along Diversion Road, Barangay Gulang-Gulang in Lucena City. The minor was found standing on a concrete beam, armed with a knife, and attempting to harm himself. Witnesses immediately alerted authorities, recognizing the urgent need for intervention.

Personnel from the Lucena City Police, led by Police Staff Sergeants Norbert Openda and Ardie Ganado, responded to the scene, together with the Highway Patrol Team Quezon, led by PMSg Andrew San Pascual and PSSg Sonny Robrigado; the Bureau of Fire Protection Rescue Unit, led by FO3 Karls Gary Flores; and the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO), led by Mr. Dion Sayago Brizuela.

Through a coordinated effort and careful negotiation, the responders were able to safely approach the minor and bring him to safety. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for medical and psychological care, where he was later declared in stable condition.

The Philippine National Police, under the leadership of Police General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil, urges the public to remain vigilant and attentive to signs of mental distress in those around them.

The quick response of authorities was made possible by the community members who reported the incident, demonstrating that compassion and awareness are crucial in saving lives. It proves that behind the headlines of crime and conflict are stories of kindness and unity— proof of the inherent goodness in humanity.

PNP remains committed to promoting not only peace and order but also the welfare and mental well-being of every Filipino.
