Being part of the uniformed service is a calling that is far from easy. While many may dream of wearing the badge, only a few are truly called to serve—those whose compassion and commitment extend far beyond duty hours. True service reveals itself not only in the performance of duty, but also in critical moments, especially when danger strikes without warning and one must act, even when off duty.
In the early morning of April 25, 2025, Patrolman Ray Lemuel Zabat, an off-duty police officer assigned at Mexico MPS, demonstrated his exceptional bravery by responding to a robbery incident in Malinoville Subdivision, Barangay Malino, San Fernando City, Pampanga.
According to reports, a suspect allegedly scaled a metal fence and forcibly entered the home of a 36-year-old driver, identified as “Mr. DJ.” The homeowner caught the suspect in the act of stealing two mobile phones—a blue Vivo and a black Redmi. Upon witnessing the break-in, Mr. Antonio Zabat, the father of the responding officer, immediately alerted his son, who lived nearby.

Without hesitation, Patrolman Zabat rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, he found the suspect attempting to flee with the stolen items. As the officer intercepted the suspect, the latter allegedly drew a firearm from his waistband, prompting Patrolman Zabat to act in self-defense. A single shot was fired, striking the suspect in the abdomen who was later declared dead at the crime scene.
As of this writing, authorities are continuously working to establish the identity of the deceased suspect and further investigate any potential links to other criminal activities in the area.

Patrolman Ray Lemuel Zabat’s actions are a clear testament to the values of bravery and selfless service that the Philippine National Police (PNP) instills in its personnel. Even while off duty and within the comfort of his own home, Patrolman Zabat chose to honor his sworn duty—risking his life to protect his community.
His heroism serves as an inspiration to all members of the police force, reminding them that the true essence of public service lies not only in fulfilling one’s duties but also in choosing to do what is right when it matters most.
Under the leadership of PNP Chief, Police General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil, PNP continues to urge the public to remain vigilant, report suspicious activity, and work hand in hand with authorities to ensure peace and security across the country.
