Oftentimes, stories of misconduct often dominate the headlines, and tales of heroism and dedication by law enforcement officers sometimes just fade away. Yet, these acts of courage deserve recognition, for they embody the true essence of public service. One such act was the incident that transpired during the New Year’s Eve Mass on December 31, 2024, in Zamboanga City, when a seemingly ordinary church service had turned into a testament to the valor and resilience of the Nation’s Peacekeepers.
During the New Year’s Eve Mass at Mount Carmel Parish Church in Barangay Ayala, Police Senior Master Sergeant Ryan Mariano of the Zamboanga City Police Station 9 Special Drug Enforcement Team (SDET) was on covert duty when an unforeseen had danger arose. Two gunmen, one identified as “Haber Tating”, with a standing warrant for two counts of murder, had opened fire, which resulted in PSMS Mariano being wounded. Despite sustaining severe injuries, PSMS Mariano had fought back with determination, neutralizing both assailants and ensuring the safety of churchgoers.
Amid the chaos, Correction Officer 1 (CO1) Melvin Cabanal Magnaye of the Bureau of Corrections had emerged in the scene. Witnessing the unfolding danger, CO1 Magnaye immediately had stopped his vehicle and had used it as a shield to protect an innocent civilian caught in the crossfire. Without hesitation, he transported PSMS Mariano to Labuan General Hospital to ensure that the latter receives immediate medical attention.
This swift response was made possible because of the decisive leadership of Police Colonel Kimberly Molitas, Zamboanga City Police Director. Under her vigilant watch, the police force had remained focused and prepared, ensuring the safety of the community in the face of an unpredictable crisis.
The story of this bravery reached the national stage with the commendation of the Senate, led by Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa through Resolution No. 240. Senator Dela Rosa, in his sponsorship speech had aptly stated: “There is no greater amount of nobility than to give one’s life to protect another. However, we would always want and pray that in the process of keeping others from harm, our law enforcers live and tell the tale.”
PSMS Mariano was awarded the Medalya ng Katapangan (PNP Bravery Medal) presented by Police General Rommel Francisco D Marbil, along with DILG Secretary Juanito Victor C. Remulla, represented by Atty. Ricardo P. Bernabe III, NAPOLCOM Vice Chairperson and Executive Officer during the 34th PNP Foundation Day held at PNP Multi-Purpose Center, National Headquarters, Camp BGen. Rafael T. Crame, Quezon City on January 30, 2025.
This inspiring story of valor and leadership reaffirms the nobility of the police service. It highlights the grit and determination of law enforcers who stand as protectors of the community, deserving not just our recognition but also our deepest respect and gratitude.
