Recognizing the Heroism of PMSg Heribert B. Plares

The role of a police officer demands unwavering courage, dedication, and a willingness to face danger in the line of duty. These qualities were exemplified by PMSg Heribert B. Plares, who had demonstrated extraordinary bravery during a robbery incident in Binalonan, Pangasinan. Despite sustaining life-threatening injuries, PMSg Plares had fulfilled his duty to protect the public and uphold the law. His actions serve as a testament to the sacrifices made by law enforcers in ensuring peace and security in the community.

On January 23, 2025, Police Brigadier General Lou F. Evangelista, Regional Director of Police Regional Office 1 (PRO1), had provided additional financial assistance to PMSg Heribert B. Plares during the latter’s courtesy call at Camp Oscar M. Florendo, Parian, City of San Fernando, La Union. This initiative had aligned with PBGen Evangelista’s flagship program which emphasizes the morale and welfare of PRO 1 personnel.

Looking back, on November 30, 2024, a robbery took place at an establishment in Binalonan, Pangasinan. Authorities were immediately alerted, and PMSg Plares, along with his team, responded to the scene. During the operation, he intercepted one of the suspects, who suddenly launched a violent attack, stabbing him in the left chest and back. Despite his severe injuries, PMSg Plares managed to defend himself, firing his weapon and critically wounding the suspect.

The suspect was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival. PMSg Plares was promptly taken to the hospital where he had received immediate medical attention. He is currently recovering from his injuries. Authorities continue their investigation to identify and apprehend the second suspect who was involved in the robbery.

In recognition of his bravery and selfless service, PMSg Heribert B. Plares was awarded the Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting by PRO1 Regional Director, PBGen Evangelista. The award is one of the highest honors given to police officers who had demonstrated exceptional courage and sacrifice in the line of duty.

During the awarding ceremony, PBGen Evangelista had commended PMSg Plares for his commitment to public safety. “PMSg Plares actions embody the highest ideals of the Philippine National Police. His bravery and dedication to duty, even in the face of grave danger, serve as an inspiration to all of us,” PBGen Evangelista had stated.

The Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting is not only a recognition of individual heroism but also a reminder of the risks that police officers face daily. It underscores the sacrifices made by law enforcers to protect the community and maintain peace and order. By honoring PMSg Plares, the PRO1 reaffirms its commitment to valuing and supporting its personnel who often put their lives on the line to ensure the safety of others.
