The Journey of Sariaya in Quezon towards Peace and Reconciliation

In a community, the presence of CTGs (Communist Terrorist Groups) has long been a source of distress and discord. Their influence often breeds fear, suspicion, and division among residents, leaving deep scars of distrust and uncertainty. The insidious grip of CTGs can disrupt the fabric of community life, instilling a sense of insecurity and apprehension among its members.

In Sariaya, Quezon, on April 18, 2024, a significant initiative unfolded as the Quezon Police Provincial Office and the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 4A, led by the Area Police Command Southern Luzon, organized a momentous event at the Poblacion 6 Sports Complex. This event marked a crucial juncture of denouncement and redemption, targeting former supporters of leftist groups through the Revitalized Pulis sa Barangay or the R-PSB program.  RPCADU 4A (Regional Police Community Affairs and Development Unit 4A) also joined in the activity, led by Police Colonel Medrid E. Patam, amplifying the reach and impact of the event.

One hundred former rebels and CTG supporters received food packs from the Sariaya Quezon Local Government and NGOs, symbolizing not just sustenance, but a tangible gesture of reconciliation. They also affixed their signatures to a solemn pact, renouncing any allegiance or support to leftist factions.

The event stands as a beacon of resilience and cooperation in the face of adversity. Beyond the symbolic gestures of reconciliation and denouncement, it signifies a deeper commitment to addressing the root causes of unrest within the community. By extending a hand of understanding and support to former rebels and CTG supporters, local authorities demonstrate a willingness to engage in a dialogue, where rehabilitation is underscored, rather than resorting solely to punitive measures.

The collaboration between law enforcement agencies and civil society organizations highlights the importance of a holistic approach to peace-building. Combining security measures with socio-economic initiatives such as livelihood assistance and community development projects, they aim to create lasting solutions that address the grievances and vulnerabilities that fuel support for extremist ideologies.

In this journey towards healing and reconciliation, the people of Sariaya, Quezon, exemplify the power of collective action and empathy. Through their concerted efforts, they sow the seeds of trust and solidarity, laying the groundwork for a future where fear and division yield to understanding and cooperation. As they continue to work hand in hand, they inspire hope not only for their own community but for others who are grappling with similar challenges across the nation.
