Unified Communities: Battling Illegal Drugs and Crime Together

The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), led by Acting City Director PCol Antonietto Ybañez Cañete, made an important move to tackle the problem of illegal drugs and crime in the city through a program “Pakighimamat ni CD sa Barangay” held at Barangay Day-as gymnasium on Thursday afternoon, August 22, 2024.

This community-driven initiative brings together barangay local government units, partner agencies, NAPOLCOM 7, multisectoral stakeholders, and the police force to tackle the issues of illegal drugs and crime. The program, which translates to “Meet and Greet” in Cebuano, takes a grassroots approach that enables communities to take control of their own safety and security.

The initiative was introduced in response to growing concerns about illegal drugs and criminal activities in the city, which have been affecting residents’ daily lives and disturbing the community’s peace and order. To implement this program, CCPO had partnered with local government units, including the City Mayor’s Office, City Council; and with barangay officials. The initiative had also involved different multisectoral stakeholders, such as local business owners, community leaders, and religious groups.

The goal of this initiative is to strengthen community policing by increasing public awareness about the government’s fight against illegal drugs and crime. The program “Pakighimamat ni CD sa Barangay” had focused on building trust and cooperation between the police and the community, aimed to teach people the importance of reporting illegal activities and supporting the police in their efforts to combat crime. It strengthens the sense of community, encourages collaboration, and can lead to a safer and more supportive environment for everyone.

Many communities are also running programs to educate people, especially the youth. Schools, churches, and local groups are organizing workshops and seminars to spread awareness and offer support to those who need it. By teaching people about these issues, they hope to prevent drug use and reduce criminal behavior in the community.

The strong sense of unity is making a big difference. These community-led initiatives show the strength and determination of the people in Cebu City. While there are still challenges, the ongoing efforts of these communities are making a positive impact in the fight against illegal drugs and crime.
