A strong police force is most effective when supported by the trust and cooperation of the people it serves. In every community, citizens and local leaders play a vital role in preventing crime, addressing security concerns, and maintaining peace and order.
This spirit of cooperation was demonstrated on August 14, 2026, during a community engagement activity in Valderrama, Antique, where 17 Punong Barangays helped facilitate the voluntary turnover of 20 loose firearms and six rounds of ammunition. Their participation encouraged residents to surrender firearms that were not properly authorized or registered, demonstrating how local leadership can help advance the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) public safety initiatives.
The accomplishment forms part of the PNP Focused Agenda, particularly Active Community Support, which emphasizes the importance of responsive policing strengthened by coordination and community participation. While removing unauthorized firearms from communities is an important public safety measure, the initiative also highlights a broader objective: building a culture of cooperation in which residents feel encouraged to work with the police to address concerns that may affect their safety.
Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., PNP Chief, emphasized that the accomplishment reflects the value of trust and cooperation between law enforcement and local communities.
“Kapag may tiwala, mas madaling magtulungan. Hindi lang ito tungkol sa mga baril na isinuko—mas mahalaga na may mga barangay leaders na handang makipag-ugnayan at tumulong sa pagpapanatili ng seguridad sa kanilang lugar. We want that kind of partnership to grow, because public safety works best when police and communities move together,” he said.
The participation of the Punong Barangays underscores their important role as partners of the police in promoting public safety. As local leaders who maintain regular contact with residents, they can help communicate public safety concerns, encourage compliance with the law, and facilitate coordination between their constituents and law enforcement agencies.
Such community support is important in addressing loose firearms, which may pose risks to public safety when improperly possessed or left unaccounted for. Through community engagement and voluntary compliance, the initiative strengthens the PNP’s ongoing efforts to account for unauthorized firearms while promoting lawful and peaceful means of resolving firearms-related concerns.
The PNP encourages individuals who may still possess loose or unauthorized firearms to coordinate with the nearest police station and comply with the appropriate procedures for the lawful turnover of such firearms. Guided by the “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat, at Nararamdaman,” the Nation’s Peacekeepers will continue to work hand in hand with local leaders and community members to strengthen this partnership and help build safer and more secure communities across the country.
