Citizens vs. Crime: 68 Fishermen Help Foil Drug Smuggling with Php8.8Billion Shabu Turnover

Acting on President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to strengthen maritime interdiction and reinforce national security, the Philippine National Police (PNP) recognized the exemplary civic action of 68 fishermen from the coastal provinces of Bataan, Pangasinan, Zambales, and Ilocos Sur, who voluntarily turned over to authorities a total of 1,297.911 kilograms of suspected shabu, valued at approximately Php8.8Billion, between June 2 and June 9, 2025.

Upon discovering suspicious packages washed ashore, the fishermen immediately alerted and coordinated the authorities, including the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), PNP Maritime Group (PNP-MG), PNP Drug Enforcement Group (PNP-DEG), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), and the Philippine Navy (PN).

This extraordinary act of honesty and vigilance exemplifies the critical role of citizens in national security and crime prevention, reflecting the growing trust in the government’s campaign against illegal drugs. The voluntary turnover of such a massive volume of narcotics sends a strong message of shared responsibility in protecting our shores and communities.

PNP Chief, Police General Nicolas D. Torre III, extended his deepest appreciation to the fishermen, recognizing their vital contribution to the country’s anti-drug efforts.

“We salute these 68 fishermen whose brave and honest actions are a powerful example of what [citizen’s] cooperation can achieve. This historic series of voluntary turnovers sends a resounding message—that when the people and government stand united, criminal elements will find no sanctuary,” said PGen Torre.

PNP underscores the importance of continued public vigilance, particularly in coastal areas increasingly targeted by international drug syndicates as drop-off points for smuggled narcotics. The organization remains steadfast in its mission to secure the nation’s borders and work hand-in-hand with all sectors of society to realize a drug-free Philippines.

The Philippine National Police, led by its Chief, Police General Nicolas D. Torre III, urges all citizens to emulate the courage and sense of duty demonstrated by these fishermen, whose actions will be remembered as a cornerstone of the nation’s campaign against illegal drugs.
