Over Php15-Million Worth of Smuggled Cigarettes Seized in Zamboanga Sibugay

On December 3, 2024, a joint operation by various law enforcement units had successfully dismantled a large illegal smuggling operation in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay, resulting to the seizure of over Php15 million worth of smuggled cigarettes. The operation was carried out at around 3:40 AM in Purok 4, Barangay Laih, Siay, Zamboanga Sibugay, with the collaboration of the Provincial Intelligence Unit of the Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Office, PNP Maritime Police Station, Siay Municipal Police Station, Kabasalan Municipal Police Station, and the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company.

The Bureau of Customs Pagadian City Office had also played a crucial role in the operation, reinforcing the ongoing efforts to combat the illegal importation and distribution of contraband goods in the region. The targeted operation had focused on uncovering the illicit cigarette trade that has been plaguing the area and undermining government revenue.

The operation had led to the arrest of a 25-year-old male laborer who was allegedly involved in the smuggling operation. The authorities had confiscated a staggering haul of smuggled cigarettes, including various popular brands. In total, the operation had resulted to the confiscation of 261 master cases, 314 reams, and 33 packs of smuggled cigarettes, with an estimated street value of Php 15,318,926.00. This major seizure is a significant blow to the illegal cigarette trade, which not only affects government revenue but also poses health risks to the public.

The operationโ€™s success underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between local and national law enforcement agencies in addressing the growing problem of smuggling in the region. In a statement, Police Brigadier General Bowenn Joey M. Masauding, the Regional Director of Police Regional Office 9 (PRO 9), had praised the efforts of the operatives involved. โ€œPRO 9 remains committed to continuing its efforts against illegal smuggling and other criminal activities in the region. Saludo sa ating mga operatiba para sa matagumpay na operasyon sa Siay, Zamboanga Sibugay na kung saan, mahigit na 15 milyong pisong halaga ng smuggled tobacco products ang nakumpiska,โ€ he said.

The arrested individual, along with the confiscated goods, were promptly transported to the Siay Municipal Police Station for proper documentation and legal disposition. Authorities are continuing to investigate the broader network involved in the illegal smuggling operation, with hopes of dismantling further illicit activities in the region.

This operation is part of the ongoing commitment of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Bureau of Customs to curb the illegal importation and distribution of smuggled goods. PNP is intensifying its efforts to combat various forms of criminal activity, including smuggling, which has significant implications for the economy and public safety.

As authorities continue their investigation into the smuggling syndicates operating in the region, this successful operation sends a strong message that illegal activities will not be tolerated and will be met with the full force of the law. The governmentโ€™s coordinated efforts are expected to intensify as they work toward eliminating illegal tobacco products and similar contraband items from local markets.
