PNP’s Adopt-a-Student Program Supports a Young Dreamer
Education remains one of the most powerful tools for breaking the cycle of poverty and creating opportunities for a better future. For many children in disadvantaged communities, the journey to access quality education is often filled with obstacles such as lack of basic resources, poverty, and family responsibilities that compete with their studies. In such situations, even small acts of support can make a significant difference in ensuring that a child’s dreams do not fade, enabling them to continue learning and pursuing their goals despite hardships.
For 13-year-old Jereboy T. Degillo, a Grade VI pupil of Macatumbalen Elementary School in Sitio Macatumbalen, Barangay Poblacion, San Vicente, Palawan, the pursuit of education has long been accompanied by daily challenges. As the eldest of four children of Mr. Robin and Mrs. Mersenda Degillo, Jereboy not only focuses on his studies but also helps his father, a farmer, in their fields to support the family’s livelihood.
The Degillo family lives in one of the most economically challenged areas in their community. Their home was severely damaged during Typhoon Odette, leaving them with limited resources to rebuild. Without electricity, studying at night became an extra hurdle for Jereboy, who often relied on the faint glow of a lamp whenever it was available just to review his lessons and complete his assignments.
Recognizing the determination of the young student despite his hardships, personnel from the San Vicente Airport Police Station (SVAPS) of the Aviation Security Unit 4 (AVSEU 4), under the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (AVSEGROUP), led by its Director, Police Brigadier General Dionisio B. Bartolome Jr., stepped in to help through the Adopt-a-Student Program. The initiative aims to support underprivileged learners by providing the basic resources they need to continue their education.

The program officially began after an initial visit and assessment on August 11, 2025. During the visit, SVAPS personnel spoke with Jereboy’s parents to explain the program’s objectives and obtain their consent to include their son as a beneficiary. One of the major forms of assistance provided to Jereboy was a solar-powered light, enabling him to study at night without worrying about electricity. This small but essential support immediately improved his ability to complete his lessons and prepare for school the next day. In addition, he received a weekly allowance to help cover school expenses, allowing him to focus more on his education and easing the financial burden on his family.

Understanding that meaningful support requires continuity, SVAPS personnel continued to monitor Jereboy’s progress. Led by PSMS Rommel B. Ello, Team Leader, under the supervision of PLtCol Jerry M. Costina, Officer-in-Charge of AVSEU 4, the team maintained close coordination with his class adviser, Mr. John Renan D. Alarde. On January 14, 2026, they conducted a follow-up visit to assess whether the assistance provided was helping improve Jereboy’s attendance and academic performance, particularly in reducing the days he had to miss school due to farm responsibilities.

The results of their continued engagement soon became evident. Jereboy’s school absences dropped significantly, and his academic performance showed gradual improvement. These positive changes demonstrated how sustained support, even in small ways, can make a meaningful change in the life of a determined young learner.

Further reinforcing their commitment, SVAPS personnel also provided additional school supplies and financial assistance to support Jereboy’s education. These efforts reflect not only the unit’s dedication but also its belief that helping one child succeed can inspire hope throughout the entire community.

This initiative aligns with the broader mission of PNP, under the leadership of Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., PNP Chief, to strengthen community ties while investing in the welfare of the youth. Through programs like Adopt-a-Student, the Nation’s Peacekeepers demonstrate that the role of law enforcement is not only to maintain peace and order but also to uplift communities through compassion, partnership, and social responsibility.
More than a story of help, Jereboy’s journey stands as a testament to the transformative power of education when supported by a caring community. Through the dedication of PNP personnel and the support of his teachers and family, a boy who once studied under the dim light of a lamp now has a brighter path toward achieving his dreams.
Indeed, education remains one of the strongest foundations for building a better future. Through simple yet meaningful acts of service, PNP continues to strengthen community bonds and shape the lives of young Filipinos. Jereboy’s journey shows that sometimes all it takes to create real change is for someone to believe in a child’s potential and help them believe in themselves. With guidance, support, and encouragement, even the smallest acts of care can light the way to a brighter tomorrow.
