About a week before the country celebrates National Heroes Day, two police officers demonstrated selfless sacrifice and commitment, wearing their respective uniforms with courage and bravery and fulfilling their sworn duties as members of the nation’s peacekeepers. They journeyed along the same path, ignited by the same purpose—to enforce the law and maintain peace and order. But enforcing the law effectively carries its own weight; often, it costs the lives of those entrusted to uphold it. It is a bittersweet reality for every uniformed personnel who devotes themselves to the betterment of the country and the safety of its people.
On August 22, 2026, personnel from the San Jose Municipal Police Station quickly responded to an armed individual causing chaos in Zone 1, Barangay Calalahan, San Jose, Camarines Sur.
Upon arrival, the team, led by Police Staff Sergeant Noli M. Miraña, attempted to peacefully de-escalate the situation. Demonstrating remarkable restraint, they tried to communicate with the suspect, who was believed to be in the midst of a mental health crisis. However, the suspect suddenly charged at the officers, causing PSSg Miraña to fall. The suspect then attacked him with a bolo, inflicting serious injuries to his left hand and face.
Despite the assault, the team acted decisively, intervening to stop the attack and protect their comrade. They fired their service firearms with precision, hitting the suspect in both thighs and effectively neutralizing the threat. Both PSSg Miraña and the suspect were immediately rushed to Partido District Hospital and later transferred to Bicol Medical Center in Naga City for further treatment.
On August 24, Police Brigadier General Ronaldo I. Fulo, Deputy Regional Director for Administration of the Police Regional Office 5, represented Police Brigadier General Erosito N. Miranda, Regional Director, PRO5, in personally bestowing the Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting on PSSg Miraña in recognition of his gallantry.
Another heartbreaking incident took place in the province of Zamboanga del Sur. Police Major Aiman Khuzaimah P. Pantaran, an intelligence officer of the Pagadian City Police Station, lost his life during a legitimate buy-bust operation involving two suspected illegal firearm dealers in Purok Malipayon, Barangay Dao, Pagadian City, on August 23, 2026.
Initial investigation revealed that the suspects, identified as Jhonny Bravo Gomez and Jerry Bravo Gomez, allegedly opened fire after realizing they were dealing with law enforcers, triggering a gun battle. Unfortunately, PMaj Pantaran sustained fatal wounds and was rushed to Mendero Medical Center, where he was declared dead at around 12:50 in the morning. The two suspects also died from gunshot wounds.
PMaj Pantaran has aspired to become a policeman since he was 16 years old. This was after law offenders shot and killed his father, the late Police Captain Pelaez Pantaran, then Chief of the Sultan Naga Dimaporo Police Station in the province of Lanao del Norte, in an incident in the municipality that he personally witnessed. After his father’s demise, he strived hard to help sustain their family. He persisted and graduated with high honors in high school and later became a cadet at the Philippine National Police Academy. He was a proud member of PNPA Tagapamagitan Class of 2013.
Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., Chief, PNP, expressed his condolences to the family and colleagues of PMaj Pantaran, stating: “We recognize the ultimate sacrifice of our police officer and extend our deepest condolences to his family. At the same time, we will carefully establish what happened and ensure that the proper procedures are followed. Sa bawat operasyon, mahalaga ang tapang, pero kaakibat nito ang disiplina at pananagutan.”
While PSSg Miraña awaits recovery, PMaj Pantaran’s family is grieving his sudden death. Though their stories ended differently, their journeys exemplify the highest ideals of the police service—protecting lives even at great personal risk.
