A potentially tragic incident turned into an inspiring account of bravery and compassion as police officers came to the aid of a young man who attempted to harm himself at the Quirino Highway–Mindanao Avenue Underpass in Barangay Talipapa, Quezon City, on the morning of September 5, 2025. Through their swift response and genuine concern, the officers not only saved the life of the distressed individual but also upheld the safety and peace of the community.
The 29-year-old man from Caloocan City alarmed the bystanders when he climbed the concrete fence and LED screen of the underpass, placing himself in grave danger. He was seen striking himself with a rock which caused panic among onlookers and disrupted the flow of traffic in the area. The tense scene quickly drew a crowd of worried residents and passersby, many of whom feared for the man’s life.
Responding officers were Police Captain Darwin C. Pua, Police Corporal Mark Anthony Eva and Patrolman Eugene Christian Elayda of the Talipapa Police Station (PS), Quezon City Police District (QCPD). They rushed to the site after receiving the report. They immediately coordinated with the local government and barangay officials to manage the situation and secure the perimeter for the safety of the public.
Demonstrating patience and empathy, the officers spoke calmly to the distressed individual, assuring him that help was available. After several minutes of negotiation, their persistence and compassion paid off—the man placed his trust in them and was safely brought down from the structure, preventing what could have ended in tragedy.
Medical responders who were on standby, quickly administered first aid at the scene before the man was transported to Quezon City General Hospital for further medical evaluation. Authorities later confirmed that the individual had been under severe personal stress, which likely contributed to his actions. Following medical clearance, he was turned over to the police station for proper documentation, counseling referral, and disposition.
The swift action of the officers not only saved a life but also prevented a possible chain of accidents and injuries that could have occurred in the area, as vehicles had slowed down and pedestrians gathered near the scene. Their professionalism ensured both the safety of the distressed man and the protection of the public.

Police Colonel Randy Glenn Silvio, Acting District Director of QCPD, lauded the timely response of the officers, noting that their courage and sensitivity in handling the situation reflect QCPD’s strong commitment to public safety and humanitarian service.
Meanwhile, Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr., Acting Chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), likewise commended the bravery and compassion shown by the responding officers. He emphasized that the role of the police extends beyond enforcing the law, as it also involves demonstrating care and humanity. He further noted that the said officers exemplified how patience and empathy can save lives and restore hope, praising them for their courage and dedication to public service.
“Ang pagliligtas na ito ay nagpapaalala na ang tungkulin ng pulis ay hindi lang magpatupad ng batas, kundi magpakita rin ng malasakit. Pinatunayan ng ating mga pulis sa Barangay Talipapa na sa tiyaga at malasakit, may buhay na maililigtas. Pinupuri ko ang kanilang tapang at pusong nagbigay ng bagong pag-asa,” the PNP Top Cop said.
PNP urges the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report incidents of this nature, so that authorities can respond swiftly and effectively.
