April 9, 2026, marks the 84th anniversary of the fierce defense by Filipino soldiers in Bataan—a day of solemn reflection and remembrance. President Elpidio Quirino officially designated April 9 as “Araw ng Bataan” through Proclamation No. 381, Series of 1953. Later, this significant occasion was recognized as “Araw ng Kagitingan” by virtue of Executive Order No. 203, s. 1987. These official declarations serve as a lasting tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought to defend the freedom and democracy deeply etched in Philippine history.

This year’s theme, “Giting ng Bayani, Pamana sa Salinlahi” (Heroism as Legacy to the Generations), honors the courage and sacrifice of Filipino heroes whose legacy continues to inspire generations. Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., Chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), was represented by Police Lieutenant General Bernard M. Banac, Deputy Chief PNP for Administration, in joining President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., high-ranking government officials, military leaders, foreign dignitaries, and World War II Philippine veterans in commemorating the 84th Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) at the Mt. Samat National Shrine in Bataan.

After 84 years, these heroes continue to be remembered as World War II Philippine veterans who, despite their youth and idealism, took on extraordinary roles in defending the nation. It is only fitting that their heroic deeds for the Republic of the Philippines continue to be remembered and honored, bringing communities together in remembrance and appreciation of their enduring contributions to peace and freedom.

On this same day, another act of heroism unfolded in the line of duty. PMSg Romulo B. Galvez Jr., a member of the SWAT team, served with distinction, protecting the nation and demonstrating utmost courage and dedication to public service.
PMSg Galvez was assigned to the Police Station 9 Drug Enforcement Team of the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) and had faithfully served the PNP for 18 years. He lost his life in the performance of duty during an anti-illegal drug buy-bust operation outside a motel along Alijis Road, Barangay Singcang-Airport.

According to reports, PMSg Galvez sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh and later succumbed to his injuries at the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center at 12:08 AM. The 32-year-old suspect was immediately arrested at the scene, where sachets of marijuana worth Php48,000 and a .45 caliber pistol loaded with five live rounds of ammunition were seized. The suspect will face charges for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, murder, and illegal possession of firearms.
Hon. Greg Gasataya, Mayor of Bacolod City, stated that PMSg Galvez “died a hero in the line of duty, making the ultimate sacrifice in our city’s ongoing pursuit of peace, justice, and the eradication of the illegal drug trade. An attack on our police force is a direct attack on the safety, security, and peace of every Bacolodnon, and it is a challenge we will not leave unanswered.”

Meanwhile, Police Brigadier General Arnold Thomas C. Ibay, Regional Director of the Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR), personally visited the wake to honor the life, service, and sacrifice of PMSg Galvez. He emphasized that Galvez’s heroism will continue to inspire and guide every police officer in fulfilling the mission of serving and protecting the country with honor and compassion.

He also paid tribute to PMSg Galvez’s memory, stating that his sacrifice will never be forgotten and that his legacy of courage and dedication will continue to inspire the service. Financial assistance and support were immediately provided, while the processing of all benefits is being expedited as a testament to the PNP’s commitment to the welfare of its personnel and their families.
As the nation remembers the bravery of our forebears, PNP reaffirms its commitment to public service under the banner of “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat, at Nararamdaman,” ensuring that the spirit of heroism and integrity continues to guide the men and women of the police force in protecting and serving the Filipino people.
