Authorities seized millions of pesos worth of illegally traded petroleum products and suspected smuggled cigarettes in two separate operations conducted in Batangas and Misamis Oriental. The successful operations underscore the intensified enforcement efforts of the men and women of the Philippine National Police (PNP), led by Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., Chief, PNP, to safeguard the nation’s economy and combat illicit trade.
On July 9 to 10, 2026, personnel of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group Regional Field Unit 4A (CIDG RFU4A), in close coordination with the Batangas Provincial Field Unit of the CIDG and the Batangas Maritime Police Station, conducted a joint law enforcement operation in the waters of Batangas that led to the interception of a tugboat carrying illegally traded petroleum products.

The operation resulted in the arrest of seven Filipino suspects, all of legal age, who were allegedly engaged in the unauthorized retail sale of petroleum products. Authorities recovered a tugboat loaded with approximately 31,199 liters of diesel fuel, five plastic containers containing diesel fuel, and the marked money used during the operation. The recovered tugboat and petroleum products have a combined estimated market value of Php62,294,027.
As of this writing, the arrested individuals, together with the recovered evidence, have been placed in the custody of CIDG RFU4A for proper documentation and the filing of appropriate charges. The recovered tugboat remains in the custody of the Batangas Maritime Police Station pending further legal proceedings.
PGen Nartatez commended the operating units for their coordinated efforts and emphasized that the PNP will continue its relentless campaign against illegal economic activities that adversely affect the country’s economy and the welfare of the Filipino people.
“Malaki man o maliit ang operasyon, pareho ang mensahe natin—walang puwang ang mga iligal na gawain na nakaaapekto sa kabuhayan ng ating mga mamamayan at sa ekonomiya ng bansa. Patuloy tayong kikilos nang patas, ayon sa batas, at may paggalang sa karapatan ng bawat isa,” he said.
A day later, on July 11, another significant accomplishment was recorded in Northern Mindanao after authorities intercepted suspected smuggled cigarettes worth Php20.8 Million during a border control checkpoint operation at the Regional Border Control Point in Barangay Kibungsod, Magsaysay, Misamis Oriental.
The operation was carried out by personnel of the 1001st Maneuver Company of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 10, the 1st Provincial Mobile Force Company, the Magsaysay Municipal Police Station (MPS) of the Misamis Oriental Police Provincial Office, and the Regional Intelligence Division 10. While conducting routine checkpoint operations, police flagged down a cargo truck for inspection. Instead of complying, the driver deliberately breached the checkpoint and fled, prompting an immediate pursuit by the operating personnel.

The fleeing vehicle was eventually intercepted, and authorities discovered 520 master cases of suspected smuggled cigarettes concealed beneath bundles of abaca fiber. The confiscated contraband has an estimated market value of Php20,800,000. Three individuals were arrested during the operation and were brought, together with the seized evidence, to the Magsaysay MPS for documentation and the filing of appropriate charges.
The PNP Chief lauded the operating units for their swift action. He stressed that law enforcement authorities will remain vigilant in securing the country’s borders against the movement of illegal goods.
“This operation shows that criminal groups cannot simply outrun the law. Our border control efforts will remain firm, intelligence-driven, and focused on protecting legitimate trade and the public interest,” he added.
The two successful operations highlight the PNP’s strengthened law enforcement efforts under its Focused Agenda against economic crimes, including illegal petroleum trading and smuggling, which deprive the government of revenues, distort fair competition, and undermine the country’s economic stability.
The Nation’s Peacekeepers assure the public they will continue working with partner agencies to stop illegal transport and distribution of contraband, strengthen border security, and enforce the law with professionalism, integrity, and respect for human rights. These ongoing efforts reflect the organization’s commitment to the mantra, “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat, at Nararamdaman,” ensuring that the police force remains responsive, accountable, and dedicated to protect the nation’s economy and the welfare of every Filipino.
