Police Officer Saves 14-Year-Old Student from Life-Threatening Situation

A swift response by a member of the Philippine National Police (PNP) saved a 14-year-old student on Marcelo Fernan Bridge in Cebu on October 13, 2026, after she was seen attempting to jump from the bridge.

Metro Cebu CCTV monitoring duty personnel reported the incident and alerted authorities after seeing a girl climb over the bridge’s guardrail and appear to be attempting to jump. Responding immediately, Pat Eddie Anthony G. Corañes, assigned to the Headquarters of the Regional Maritime Unit 7 (HRMU 7), brought the teenager to safety.

The rescued girl, a Grade 8 student at a national high school in Pajo, was later transported by patrol car to the HRMU 7 office for documentation, appropriate disposition, and medical examination.

Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., Chief, PNP, commended the officer for his prompt action and stressed the need for decisive police intervention when lives are at risk.

“Our officers must recognize the urgency of every situation where a life is at risk. Their decisive response in this incident demonstrates the responsibility and vigilance expected of every police officer,” he said.

The PNP Chief also underscored the importance of extending understanding, guidance, and support to young people facing personal struggles, emphasizing that compassion and timely assistance can make a meaningful difference in their lives.

“Ang mga kabataang dumaranas ng mabibigat na problema ay nangangailangan ng pag-unawa, gabay, at suporta. Mahalaga na maramdaman nilang may handang makinig, umalalay, at tumulong sa kanila sa oras ng pangangailangan,” he added.

Anchored on its Focused Agenda, particularly Active Community Support, the PNP continues to promote responsive police service, strengthen community collaboration, and encourage timely intervention in situations involving individuals in distress. The PNP also emphasizes fostering a caring, supportive environment where young people feel safe seeking help and are reminded that they are not alone in facing life’s challenges.
