Bravery often reveals itself in moments of great danger, in situations when instinct must yield to courage. Such was the case of Police Staff Sergeant Junrey Terana, a dedicated member of the Tabuelan Police Station, who leapt into action and tried his best to rescue a drowning fisherman from the violent seawater of Barangay Maravilla in Cebu.
On the dawn of March 18, 2025, two fishermen went out to sea as part of their usual routine – hoping to catch more fish to feed their families and sell some for extra income. While the fishermen were in the open waters, strong waves crashed over the sides and capsized their small boat, just a few hundred meters from the coastline. They struggled to swim back to the shore, but one of them did not make it. Residents immediately alerted the authorities, recognizing the urgent need to help the fishermen.
Police Staff Sergeants Junrey Terana and Reenah Marie Lumbab were on a regular shoreline patrol, as part of their duties as Tourist Police. PSSg Terana, who had been monitoring weather updates at the coastline, was alerted by the residents about the situation. With sheer will to rescue the drowning fisherman, he selflessly swam toward the unconscious floating man. Upon bringing him to shore, he immediately administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in an attempt to save the fisherman’s life. The victim was then rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention, but unfortunately, did not survive.
Police General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil, Chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), commended the heroic act of PSSg Terana.
“Tunay na karangalan para sa PNP ang magkaroon ng mga pulis na gaya ni PSSg Terana—bayani, may malasakit, at tapat sa tungkulin,” PGen Marbil said.
The Top Cop, however, reminded the public to stay vigilant when in open waters or conducting outdoor water-related activities, and not hesitate to ask assistance from the nearest police station if necessary.
“Sa lahat ng nag-e-enjoy ngayong tag-init, pakiusap namin — unahin ang kaligtasan. Magsuot ng life vest, alamin ang lagay ng panahon, at huwag mahiyang lumapit sa aming mga pulis kung kailangan ng tulong. Laging handa ang PNP na magserbisyo,” CPNP Marbil emphasized.
The cop’s courageous act embodies PNP’s commitment to public safety—not only through enforcing the law but also in providing swift response, especially in life-threatening situations. Such commendable deed serves as a powerful example of true public service: always ready to protect and save lives.
