Every parent wants to give their child the best—love, care, and everything necessary to ensure their well-being. But life sometimes throws challenges that can make even the strongest parents feel helpless. When their efforts fall short despite their best intentions, compassion can make all the difference.
Such a story unfolded in Tabuk City, Kalinga, on October 29, 2025, when police officers responded to an incident involving a man caught stealing milk for his infant.
CCTV footage from Talavera Supermart showed the man taking a single box of Enfamil milk weighing 1.725 kilograms. He was apprehended by store personnel and brought to Sub-Station 2 in Bulanao, Tabuk City.
Investigations revealed that the man is a single father who had recently lost his job after a construction project ended. Left alone with his infant after his partner abandoned them, he admitted stealing the milk out of desperation to feed his baby. He also told authorities that he had not eaten for a day and that his two-month-old daughter had been crying from hunger. He explained that after losing his job, he finds it difficult to get back on his feet.
Instead of being apprehended, the father received genuine compassion from Police Lieutenant Colonel Jack E. Angog, Chief of Police of Tabuk City, who personally paid for the stolen milk. His gesture spared the man from imprisonment and gave him a chance to rebuild his life.
PLtCol Angog explained that his intention was to offer the father a new beginning, reminding him that he would eventually find another job and be able to provide for his child’s needs. “Sometimes, people just need help, not [immediate] punishment,” he said in an interview.
Witnesses praised PLtCol Angog’s act of kindness, noting that it changed what could have been a story of crime and despair into one of empathy and humanity. Local social workers have since reached out to the father, offering employment support and food assistance for his child.
Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., Acting Chief of the Philippine National Police, highlighted the importance of compassionate leadership, saying: “PNP does not condone any form of theft or wrongdoing. But we must also remember that behind every violation, there is often a story of hardship. This is where compassionate leadership must take place: to enforce the law firmly, but with understanding and empathy. That is the true essence of public service.”
While laws must always be upheld, PNP recognizes that acts of kindness can transform a moment of weakness into an opportunity for redemption and a second chance. In the end, this story reminds us that true justice is not always measured by the force of the law, but by the compassion one person shows to another.
